Isaiah 9:6:

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Salvation has not changed from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Jesus, the man, brought salvation. He was as much for the believers in the Old Testament as He is for us today. who came and manifested Himself. In Isaiah 9:6, He is called "the child that was born" and "the Son that was given." Jesus is the unique Person of the universe. No one has ever existed like Him nor will anyone ever exist like Him again. There is salvation under no other name because Jesus is God manifested in the flesh. He is the unique Person because He is God and He is also man. There was never a time when He did not exist. He is the Son that was given but, he is also the child that was born. The child was born because, in His humanity, He came into being; but as the Son of God, He could only be given because He already existed. Jesus is the divine entanglement. He is the Father manifested in this earth.

The bringing together of humanity and Deity was called the "hypostatic union." This word comes from the Greek word "hupostasis." It is the word we usually use for "foundation" but it is also the word translated "substance" in Hebrews chapter 11, verse 1.

Hebrews 11:1:

Now faith is the substance (hupostasis) of things hoped for.

In the spirit realm faith is a substance. When you believe God's Word in your heart and you speak it out of your mouth, substance in the spirit realm. From that substance, God forms the thing you desire and the thing you want. Faith is the substance of the thing you hope for. It is the evidence of the thing not yet seen. "Substance" is something that can be handled, something that can be held. There was a day when God, Who is invisible to the natural eye and could not be handled with our natural hands, came into this earth and took on substance so we could handle Him, feel Him, talk to Him, communicate with Him. When we talk with Jesus, we talk with God. The disciples once said to Jesus, "Show us the Father." Jesus responded, "How long have I been with you? To see me is to see the Father, for I and the Father are one."

The name of "Jesus" is a reference to the humanity of the Christ child and "Christ" is a reference to His deity. Christ means "the anointed one." As deity, Jesus manifested Himself in this earth many times before He ever took on a human body. It was Christ who walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. It was Christ who appeared in the Old Testament as the Angel of the Lord. It was Christ who was the pillar of cloud by day and the fire by night who would accompany the children of Israel.

Another title for His humanity is "the Son of man." The title, "Son of man," strictly refers to His humanity. "Son of God" is the title for His Deity. The title for His hypostatic union is "Jesus Christ" or "Christ Jesus." When you find the name "Jesus Christ" or the name "Christ Jesus" in the Word of God, it refers to the fact that Jesus is the mediator between God and man.

1 Timothy 2:5:

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

When the Word is speaking of Him as mediator, His names will be listed either as "Jesus Christ" or "Christ Jesus." When the name "Jesus" is mentioned first, His humanity is being emphasized. When the name "Christ" is mentioned first, His deity is being emphasized. A mediator is one who stands between two impossible situations and pulls them together. It is impossible for man, in his fallen condition, to be united with God. And, it is impossible for God to come down to man's level to redeem him. Someone had to come and stand between God and man; and His name is Jesus Christ! He can satisfy the claims of man because He is man. He can satisfy the claims of God because He is God. I have access to God through the Mediator; but God has access to me through the mediator! Glory to God! God could not have any contact with sin. God could not have any contact with death. God could not have any contact with the curse of the law. However, Jesus could come into this earth and God could identify with the death of Jesus on the cross and we could identify with the death of Jesus on the cross. Jesus pulled God and man together. The only reason we can stand in God's presence is because we have been redeemed through the Mediator, the Lord Jesus Christ.

When the name "Jesus Christ" or "Christ Jesus" is mentioned in the scriptures, it also indicates the action of the verse. "Jesus Christ" is used to indicate the action of the verse is from man towards God. "Christ Jesus" is used to indicate the action of the verse is from God towards man. Did you know it is unscriptural for us to approach the throne in the name of Christ? Nowhere in the Word of God did anyone ever use the name of "Christ." They used the name of "Jesus" - the name of "Jesus Christ." In prayer, in the Word of God, in casting out devils, the name that caused demons to tremble is not "Christ"; it is the conquering name of "Jesus." There was a day when a man went into hell and conquered the devil, and His name is Jesus! Jesus came into this earth and took on an ordinary name. At the resurrection, that ordinary name was lifted up to an equality with God and given a place and a position above every name --that at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow, of things in heaven and things on the earth and things under the earth. Thank God for the name of Jesus!

Throughout the Word of God there are types of Jesus' humanity and His deity. One type is the ark of the covenant the children of Israel carried in the Old Testament. The ark of the covenant had to precede the children of Israel and was also what they gathered around to worship. Only those who were anointed could stand in it's presence. The ark was made of acacia wood and overlaid with gold. Acacia wood is a type of Jesus' humanity--that which is vulnerable. Gold is a type of His deity--that which is costly. Inside the ark were three articles: Aaron's rod that budded, a pot of manna, and the tablets of the Law. All three of these represented provisions given by God and rejected by men. Aaron's rod was a type of the priesthood; man rejected the priesthood. The pot of manna was a type of God's provisions for man; man rejected God's provisions. Finally man said, "Give us a law, and we'll keep it," but man disregarded the law. All three of these also represent a type of sin. Sin is nothing more than rejecting what God has given you. Man cannot meet God's standard. Therefore, all three of these represent what was given by God but rejected by man. The ark of the covenant was a type of the Lord Jesus Christ bearing in Himself the sins of the world.

In the Word of God, Jesus spoke from His humanity, from His deity, and even from His hypostatic union. In John 19:28, Jesus spoke from His humanity when He said "I thirst." Also, in Luke 9:58 Jesus said, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath no where to lay his head." Why would these verses be His humanity speaking? Because deity does not thirst and deity does not sleep. In fact, in the book of Psalms God said, "Neither do I slumber, nor do I sleep." These are just a few examples of Jesus' humanity.

Next, Jesus spoke from His deity, when speaking to the religous leaders.

John 8:51-58:

Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keeps my sayings, he shall never see death. Then said the Jews unto Him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my sayings he shall never taste of death. Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? And the prophets are dead: Whom makest thou thyself? Jesus answered, If I honor myself, my honor is nothing: It is my Father that honoreth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his sayings. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw it and was glad. Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, before Abraham was, I am.

Notice, Jesus used the name only God had been allowed to use. That is why verse 59 says, "Then took they up stones to cast at him." Why were they going to throw stones at Him? Because to use that name was blasphemy. Jesus said, "I am God. The reason I was here before Abraham, the reason I could talk with Abraham and he could receive me and rejoice to see me, is because I Am." When Jesus said,"I Am" in this scripture, He was speaking from His deity. In John 10:30 Jesus said,"I and my Father are one." When Jesus made that declaration, He was speaking from His deity.

Finally, Jesus spoke from His hypostatic union. In Matthew, chapter 11:28, Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." First, Jesus said, "Come unto me..." Jesus was speaking from His humanity as He was beckoning to the multitudes. Next, He said, "...and I will give you rest." The only "I" who can give us rest is God. That was His deity.

Luke 1:80:

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit...

"Spirit" in this verse is speaking of His human spirit; this is speaking of His inward man.

Luke 2:52:

And Jesus (humanity) increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Deity did not need to increase in favor; Jesus' humanity increased in favor. If His humanity can increase in favor with God and man, so can we! We can become strong in wisdom, we can become strong in stature, and we can increase in favor with God and man.

If Jesus could speak from His deity and He could speak from His humanity, He could only speak from His humanity when His humanity was old enough to speak. Isn't it true that deity never grows up? Jesus could speak from His deity at any time, whether His humanity was old enough to speak or not. Jesus spoke out of His deity even when He was in the cradle. Hebrews 10:5 says, "Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith..." Now, Jesus did not roll over in the crib and speak to Mary; He spoke to His Father. He said, "Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God." Glory to God! Jesus was speaking to His Father, even from this time. Why? Because as deity He could speak. Remember, again, Jesus is not fifty percent God and fifty percent man; He is one hundred percent God and one hundred percent man. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him (the Son which was given--deity) should not perish, but have everlasting life."

1 John 4:15:

Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

1 John 5:1:

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ (deity) is born of God: and everyone that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

1 John 5:5:

Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

1 John 5:10-13:

He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

These verses tell us Jesus is more than a man. You can believe on Him as a man. In fact, the religious leaders did. They accused Jesus, "Well, You're just a man and you're claiming to be older than Abraham?" Jesus responded, "You've missed the whole point: Before Abraham was, I Am."
