And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. (John 2:2)
Perhaps like the marriage Jesus was invited to join, you have run out of wine in some area of your life. Wine can be a symbol of many things in the Christian life, one of which is joy.
You might have lost your joy over a friendship or marriage that went wrong. You may have been hurt by someone who promised to be there for you, but then failed to keep their word. It is possible another Christian "used" you for their own gain, then threw away your trust when they had what they wanted. In one way or another, you took your eyes off the Lord, gave up or tried to solve the problem on your own.
Real joy in our life comes from the Holy Spirit's control. When we try to live a godly life on our own, we can lose our joy very quickly. God's kingdom is "…righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." You may be born again and have the Holy Spirit living in your heart, but is He controlling your life? Perhaps, like those at the wedding feast, you need a miracle of new and better wine.
Let's take some points from this story and apply them to our lives today.
1. Jesus was invited to the wedding.
Admit you cannot do it on your own and invite Jesus to come. Confess your sin of self dependence and see your fellowship restored.
2. Jesus arrived just as the wine had run out.
Understand, Jesus seldom arrives early but He never arrives too late! You have not gone so far that Jesus cannot rescue you. It is a lie of Satan to think your failure is too big for God to fix.
3. Jesus' mother told the servants to do what he said.
Quit telling Jesus what to do. If you will believe Him, "… all things are possible."
4. Jesus commanded the pots to be filled with water.
Earthen vessels are a symbol of our body. The water is a type of the Word of God. If we want to see a miracle in our life, we must begin by filling ourselves with the water of the Word of God. Each exceeding promise had a miracle potential!
5. The water turned to wine without a command from Jesus.
The servants did not hear a word from Jesus. The water turned to wine between the well and the feast. As you fill your life with the Word and travel the path of obedience, the miracle will occur…you do not need an audible voice or a sign.
6. The wine at the end was better than at the beginning.
When Jesus is invited, He always saves the best for last. He will not only give joy, but it will be "indescribable and full of glory!"
