Although we love to quote the portion of Psalm 1:3 that says, “… and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper,” the previous portion of this scripture presents a few conditions we must follow. When we fulfill the guidelines in verses one and two, God will allow us to make our own decisions and He will bless those decisions.
First, we are instructed not to walk in the counsel of the ungodly. God’s children have been redeemed from the world and also from the advice and counsel that it gives. We are in a new kingdom and our new level of counsel is God’s Word. God’s advice is often backwards to the world’s, but it will always bring success! His counsel has been tried and proven for centuries. God knows our problems and the source of them. The first thing God is looking for is believers who will not walk in the counsel of ungodly people.
Secondly, we are not to stand in the way of sinners. This means we are to live a life free from sin. We are supposed to lead people to Jesus, not drive them from Him. We are to be a stepping stone to eternal life, not a stumbling block. How can we win sinners to the Lord if we live and act as they do? They know they are having problems. They are looking for answers to bring them out of those problems. Our life should be a much louder witness than our voice!
Thirdly, we are not to sit in the seat of the scornful. Bitterness and anger are not luxuries we can afford. Many Christians become scornful toward others and set themselves up as judges over the lives of other people. We need to see the best in others and choose to walk in joy instead of resentment. Joy is a choice we are to make and walk in daily. To rejoice in the Lord is a command. Therefore, it must be a choice, not a feeling that comes and goes.
Finally, our delight must be in the law of the Lord and we must meditate in God’s Word day and night. The Word brings strength to our life. Once we choose to walk in joy, we need the Word of God to maintain it. Spiritual decisions become daily realities when teamed up with the Word of God. This will cause our roots to grow deep. Then our leaf will never wither and our fruit will remain.
After all of this, God then declares, “whatever you do will prosper.” What a remarkable thought, God trusts you. If your life is pleasing to the Lord and you have prayed for direction and received nothing, perhaps God is telling you, “You decide what is best and I will back it.” Many times you do not need a green light or a red one. No light at all means proceed. God will be there to redirect if you make a mistake. If God trusts you, perhaps it is time to trust yourself. What would you like to do for God? Go ahead, do it, and watch it prosper!
