How Big is Your Cup?

David had been reflecting upon the goodness of God to supply all his need when he said "my cup runneth over" in Psalm 23:5. As a shepherd, David understood supplying the needs of his flock. Not only was David a shepherd, he was also a sheep in God's pasture. So much of God's goodness came to David each day and God's blessings were so abundant that David could not count them. It almost seemed that God poured out more provision for David's life than he could use.

The "cup" referred to in Psalm 23:5 is an analogy of our capacity to receive and enjoy the blessings of God. If we cannot contain all that God is giving, the problem is not with God--the problem is with us. We need to increase the size of our cup. If we want to receive more blessings, we need to increase our capacity.

Prosperity and Health

1 John 2 says "Beloved, I w ish above all things thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thou soul prospereth." God is always sending prosperity and healing. How big is your cup? Is it big enough to receive God's blessings? The key to increasing our cup, to increasing our capacity to receive God's blessings is the prospering of our soul. It is through the study and meditation of God's Word that our soul is prospered and increased. As faith increases in our lives through hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17), our capacity increases for receiving more of God's blessings!

A God of Abundance

We can never build a cup large enough to contain all that God gives. God still provides "…exceedingly, abundantly above all we can ask or think." (Ephesians 3:20) He still supplies "according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19) God desires that the capacity of our cup be sufficient to receive all that we need and want so that we can begin to give our extra blessings to others who are in need.

When the widow was told by Elisha "Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbors, even empty vessels; borrow not a few ," so much oil w as provided by God that every vessel was filled. There was more than enough oil for the woman and her family and she had enough excess that she sold the rest to her neighbors!

God's desire is for you to have your needs met and then be a source of blessing to those who cannot trust God for themselves.
