Building Your Life on the Rock

Building Your Life on the Rock

Bob Yandian

Matthew chapter seven, Jesus brings us to one of the most practical and revealing teachings found anywhere in the Word of God. He does not speak in abstract theology—He brings it down to where we live. He asks, in essence: Will your house withstand the storms of life?

Every believer will face storms. The rain will descend. The floods will come. The wind will blow. These storms are not optional, they are inevitable. The issue is not whether storms will come, but whether your life is built to endure them.

Jesus said that the difference between standing and falling comes down to one thing: what your life is built on.

The Wise Builder: Hearing and Doing the Word

Jesus said, “Whoever hears these sayings of Mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matthew 7:24

Notice that the wise man is not just someone who hears the Word. He is someone who does the Word. There are many believers who hear the Word regularly. They attend church, listen to sermons, read their Bible—but hearing alone is not enough.

The rock is not simply the Word of God heard—it is the Word of God applied.  It represents the promises of God taken into your life and lived out. It means you take what God has said and begin to act on it. You build your thinking on it. You build your decisions on it. You build your reactions on it.  When you do that, something happens deep in your life. You are no longer just informed, you are established.

The Storms Will Come

Jesus did not say, “If the storms come.” He said, “When the storms come.”  The rains descended. The floods came. The winds blew and beat upon that house.  Storms represent every kind of pressure in life:

Attacks from Satan.

Circumstances in a fallen world.

Problems caused by people.

Situations that seem beyond your control.

Even a life built on the Word will feel the impact of these storms. You may feel pressure or experience temporary setbacks. You may even feel shaken for a moment.  But the promise is it will not fail.  Because it is established on the rock.

From a distance, a house built on the rock may look like it went through the same storm as everyone else—and it did.  There may be some visible signs of pressure. Some shingles may be missing. Some boards may be bent. But the structure stands. The foundation holds.  This is the picture of a mature believer.  You may come through a storm with a few bumps and bruises, but you are still standing. And not only are you standing, but you are also stronger than before.  That is the kind of Christian God is looking for.

The Foolish Builder: Hearing Without Doing

Jesus then gives the contrast. He said, “Everyone who hears these sayings of Mine and does not do them is like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.” Matthew 7:26

This person also hears the Word. The difference is not hearing—it is doing.  The foolish man hears but does not apply. He listens but does not act. He knows the Word but does not build his life on it.  And when the same storm comes, and it will come, the house falls.  Jesus adds something sobering: “Great was its fall.”

The foolish person built his house on sand.  Sand is not something completely different from rock. Sand is a fragment of rock This is one of the most important truths in this teaching.  Sand represents taking only part of the Word of God—fragments, pieces, portions—and building your life on those fragments instead of the whole truth.  Many believers do this without realizing it. They take a portion of a verse, remove it from its context, and build a doctrine around it.  This is building on sand.

The Danger of Scripture Fragments

An example of this is 3 John 2, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things…” Many stop right there and say, “See? God wants me prosperous above everything else.”

But the verse does not stop there. It continues, “and be in health, just as your soul prospers.”   The full meaning is that outward prosperity follows inward growth. God is looking for stability in your soul, what you think about, your attitudes, your obedience, before He entrusts you with greater things.  When you remove that part, you have a fragment. And a fragment becomes sand.

Another example is Deuteronomy 8:18, “it is He who gives you power to get wealth…”

That sounds powerful—and it is—but the verse continues: “that He may establish His covenant.”   The purpose of prosperity is not self-centered living; it is advancing the kingdom of God.  When you leave that out, you are building on sand.

Build on the Whole Word

God is not asking you to build your life on isolated verses. He is asking you to build on the entire counsel of His Word.  That means you read scripture in context, compare scripture with scripture, and allow the whole Bible to shape your understanding.  When you do that, you are no longer standing on fragments, you are standing on a solid foundation.

Many believers treat the Word of God as a source of encouragement. And it is that, but it is much more.  The Word is your foundation, your weapon, your source of strength, your means of endurance.  The promises of God are not just comforting words—they are tools for living.  They are designed to carry you through every storm you will ever face.

When Jesus was tempted by Satan, He did not argue. He did not reason. He simply said, “It is written.”  Jesus built His life on the Word.  And because of that, Satan could not defeat Him.  Even when it looked like Satan had won at the cross, the resurrection proved otherwise. Death could not hold Him.  And Jesus said that the same principle applies to us. The gates of hell will not prevail against those who are built on the rock.

Hearing Is Not Enough

It is not enough to read the Word. It is not enough to understand it.  You must put it into action.  This is what the book of Epistle of James calls being a “doer of the Word and not a hearer only.”  The Word becomes powerful in your life when you act on it.  It is like a sword in a sheath. If it stays in the sheath, it has no effect. But when you take it out and use it, it becomes effective.

Some storms will pass quickly. Others will take time.  Not every answer is immediate. Not every healing is instant. Not every change is visible right away.  But that does not mean the Word is not working.  Sometimes God brings you through a storm instantly. Other times, He strengthens you to endure it.  Both are victories.  Storms you pass through quickly produce praise.  Storms you endure produce patience and character.

Jesus once told His disciples, “Let us pass over to the other side” (Mark 4:35).  That was a complete promise which included “Let us,” which represented everyone.  “Pass over,” not halfway but the whole way.  “To the other side,” a guaranteed destination.

When the storm came, the disciples forgot the promise. They focused on the wind and the waves instead.  But Jesus rested. Why? Because He trusted the Word He had spoken.

Resting on the Promises of God

There are thousands of promises in the Word of God.  When you find a promise keep it in context, understand it fully, apply it to your situation, stand on it, and then rest.  God’s promises are strong enough to carry you through anything Satan can bring against you.

God does not want you to fall when life becomes difficult. He wants you to stand.  He wants you to come through every storm stronger than before.  He wants you to become the kind of believer who can say: “I’ve been through storms, but I’m still standing.”  That kind of strength does not come from emotion. It comes from foundation.

You have a choice.  You can build your life on the rock—the full, complete Word of God.  Or you can build your life on sand—fragments, partial truths, and incomplete understanding.  The storms will come either way.  But only one foundation will stand.  Take the Word of God, study it, understand it, and put it into action.  Build your life on it because when you do, no storm—no matter how fierce—will ever be greater than the foundation you have in the Word of God.
