The Heart of True Ministry
Bob Yandian
The Purpose of the Power of the Holy Spirit
When Paul came to the Thessalonians, he came with a pure heart. He didn't come to get something from them. He came to give them something. His purpose was to win souls for the Lord Jesus Christ and teach those new believers how to go out and win others. This is the heart of true ministry.
Jesus told His disciples, "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me" (Acts 1:8).
There are many wonderful reasons to be filled with the Holy Spirit, but the major reason is to have power to witness for Jesus Christ. The gifts of the Holy Spirit, laying hands on the sick, seeing them recover, and casting out devils are given to help bring people to the Lord. You can't save anybody. You don't have the power to remove sins. Only God can do that. But you can demonstrate the power of God to someone who needs help. We are not here to draw attention to ourselves. We are here to point people to Jesus Christ.
Ministry Without Flattery or Covetousness
“For neither at any time did we use flattering words, as you know, nor a cloak for covetousness—God is witness. Nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when we might have made demands as apostles of Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 2:5-6)
Paul said he didn't come with flattering words or a cloak of covetousness. Neither did he seek glory from men. He wasn't interested in what he could get from the Thessalonians. He wasn't looking for money, recognition, or special treatment.
Jesus didn't put demands on people. He went wherever He was invited and ministered to their needs. Paul had the same attitude. He didn't arrive with a list of demands for hotels, offerings, or transportation. He made his stay as easy as possible and pulled his own weight.
When you're witnessing to somebody, you are not coming as Mr. Somebody or Miss Somebody. You're simply someone who has received Jesus Christ and wants another person to receive Him too.
The Heart of a Nursing Mother
“But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children.” 1 Thessalonians 2:7
What a tremendous picture of ministry!
How can a mother demand something from her newborn baby? That baby can't produce anything. The baby needs to be given to, not taken from.
When someone first gets born again, they are a spiritual baby. They don't know what's up or down. They need someone to show them what the Word of God says and teach them how to live the Christian life. Paul understood this.
In verse 8, he said he was willing to impart not only the gospel of God but also his own life because the believers had become dear to him. Paul didn't hold anything back. He didn't say, "That's our secret. We're not going to tell you how we do things." He taught them everything he knew so they could take those principles and adapt them to their own lives, cities, and countrymen. Customs may be different from one country to another, but the gospel remains the same. The purpose wasn't just to get people born again. It was to turn them into disciples who could stand on their own and win others to Jesus Christ.
A Ministry That Removes Burdens
“For you remember, brethren, our labor and toil; for laboring night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God.” 1 Thessalonians 2:9
Paul continued in verse 9, reminding the Thessalonians of his labor and toil, working night and day so he wouldn't become a burden to them. He didn't come to place burdens on people. He came to help remove them. Sin had bound people for years. Demonic activity had held them captive. Paul came preaching the gospel so they could be free through Jesus Christ.
From Spiritual Babies to Mature Children
“That you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.” 1 Thessalonians 2:12
Paul first compared his ministry to a nursing mother. Then he changed the illustration to a father instructing his children. Now that they were been born again, they were a part of the kingdom of God.
We need to walk as though we are in that kingdom because we are in that kingdom! We need to walk as a child of God because we are a son or daughter of God. How do you learn to walk worthy of God? Knowledge, knowledge, knowledge! The most important thing we can give another believer is knowledge of the Word of God. But don't stop there. They need to get involved in a good church where they can continue growing.
Remember the man who was healed at the gate called Beautiful? He went walking, leaping, and praising God. Then he followed Peter and John into the temple. He didn't just receive his miracle and walk away. He followed them into the place where God's people gathered. This is discipleship. We don't lead people to Jesus and then abandon them. We help them grow until they can stand on the Word of God themselves.
Receiving the Word as God's Word
“For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.” 1 Thessalonians 2:13
In verse 13, Paul thanked God because the Thessalonians received his message, not as the word of men, but as the Word of God, which effectively works in those who believe. Thank God for the person who brought you the gospel! Perhaps someone witnessed to you personally. Maybe you turned on the television or radio and heard somebody giving a testimony about Jesus Christ. That wasn't an accident. God arranges opportunities for people to hear the gospel.
Jesus said He needed to go through Samaria. Why? Because there was a woman at a well who needed to hear about salvation. She was wrapped up in religion, but she knew something was missing. Jesus spoke to her, and she went back into town telling others about Him.
You may be the first person to share the gospel with someone, or you may be the fifth. The Bible says one plants, another waters, but God gives the increase. Our responsibility is to witness. God's responsibility is to bring the increase.
One Hungry Person Telling Another
Witnessing is simple. It is one hungry person telling another hungry person where he found food. We don't have to know everything in the Bible to tell somebody how to receive Jesus Christ.
I remember sitting beside a man on an airplane who had heard the gospel before but hadn't accepted Jesus. Later, he realized he needed the Lord, but he couldn't remember how to receive Him. He prayed and asked God to send somebody across his path. And there I was, sitting beside him. I had the privilege of leading him to Jesus Christ. I will never forget the look on his face.
Sometimes people reject the gospel when you first present it. Don't become discouraged. You don't know what God will do with that seed later. Someone else may come along and water what you planted. And one day, that person may receive Jesus Christ.
Imitating Other Believers
One of the first things new believers do is imitate other Christians. They watch how you live. They listen to how you talk. They ask questions about what you believe and why you believe it. This is why your Christian lifestyle is so important. People learn from the Word of God and the direction of the Holy Spirit, but they also learn by watching mature believers. Your example can help someone grow in the things of God.
Standing Strong Against Religious Opposition
Paul warned the Thessalonians that persecution would come. He experienced opposition from religious people who rejected Jesus Christ and tried to stop the preaching of the gospel. Religion loves works, but the gospel presents grace. Religious people often want to put burdens on others. The gospel comes to remove those burdens through Jesus Christ.
Paul said some even forbade him to speak to the Gentiles so they might be saved. But religious people don't control your life. Jesus Christ is your Lord. The Holy Spirit lives inside of you, and the Word of God is your standard. Don't let someone bring you under condemnation with teachings that contradict the Bible. Make sure your life lines up with the Word of God. Once you have received Jesus Christ, stand firm in what you believe. Don't allow opposition to talk you out of the peace and righteousness you've received through Him.
Our Glory and Our Joy
Although Paul had been persecuted in Thessalonica, he still loved those believers and wanted to return to them. In verse 17, he explained that although they were separated physically, they weren't separated in heart.
Paul wanted to see how they were growing. He wanted to encourage them and continue teaching them the Word. In verse 18, he said Satan had hindered his attempts to return. But Paul didn't give up on them.
Then, in verses 19–20, he asked, "For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming?" And he concluded, "For you are our glory and joy." What a tremendous statement!
Paul wasn't looking at the size of his ministry, the money he received, or the recognition he gained. He was looking at people. The people he had led to Jesus Christ were his glory and joy.
One day, we will stand before the Lord and see the eternal results of our witnessing. What greater joy could there be than seeing someone you led to Jesus standing in His presence? This is the heart of true ministry: winning souls, making disciples, and teaching believers to walk worthy of God.
