Jesus Healed Everyone of Everything

When Jesus ministered on the earth, He healed everybody who came to Him of every sickness and every disease. This shows us the potential of the cross. Some may say, “I have been prayed for before, and nothing happened.” That does not mean it is Jesus’ fault, the Bible’s fault, or the cross’s fault. Not all healing comes instantly. Sometimes healing is a process, but the Word of God still reveals that healing is God’s will.
So much emphasis is placed on faith for healing that we sometimes forget the grace of healing. Faith for healing can only come after God’s grace has offered healing. The Bible says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith.” In the same way, by grace you are healed through faith. Grace and faith work hand in hand. Grace is God’s full hand reaching out to you with everything that pertains to life and godliness, and faith is your empty hand reaching out to receive what is in His hand.
Healing Every Sickness and Every Disease
Matthew 4:23 through 25 says that Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and disease. They brought Him people with different diseases and torments, those possessed with demons, those who were lunatic, and those who were paralyzed. He healed them all.
The word “all” is important. We sometimes think Jesus died for every sin, but He did not provide for every sickness. Yet the Scripture says He healed all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. People came from Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond Jordan. In other words, Jesus healed Jews and Gentiles. He did not make a difference between one person and another. He healed every one of everything.
Some people think, “I may not be one of those God wants to heal. Perhaps God picks certain people, and I may not be one of them.” If that were true, how did the crowds know which sick people to bring to Jesus? They did not separate the chosen from the unchosen. They simply brought everybody, and Jesus healed them all. Just as salvation is for everybody, healing is for everybody. Jesus took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses through His work on the cross.
Matthew 4 opens a parenthesis that closes in Matthew 9:35. Both passages use nearly the same words. Matthew 9:35 says Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. Between these two passages, Matthew records the Sermon on the Mount and then gives individual examples of healing. The entire section reveals that Jesus’ ministry began and continued with healing every kind of sickness and disease.
Jesus ministered in large cities and small villages because salvation and healing are the same everywhere. No one was brought to Him needing healing whom He refused to heal. This tells us His will. He is just as willing that no one should be sick as He is willing that no one should perish.
He Bore Our Sicknesses
Matthew 8:16 and 17 says, “When evening came, they brought to Him many who were possessed with demons, and He cast out the spirits with His word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, ‘Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.’” Matthew correctly translates the words of Isaiah 53 and makes it clear that the passage refers to physical sickness and pain.
Isaiah 53 is the great redemption chapter. Its major subject is Jesus bearing our sins, but it also contains verses concerning the healing of our bodies. The same Jesus who took our sins also took our infirmities. In His blood He provided forgiveness of sins, and in His body He provided healing from sickness and disease.
The most important thing, however, is still a person getting saved. Divine healing is for the time we are here on the earth, but salvation is eternal. God may do something temporary in the body to get a person’s attention and lead that person to something eternal, the forgiveness of sins. When the disciples returned rejoicing that demons were subject to them, Jesus told them to rejoice because their names were written in heaven. The greatest thing that ever happened in your life was the day you accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Healing is part of the gospel, but it points people toward the greater, eternal work of salvation. Paul said in Romans 15 that he had fully preached the gospel through mighty signs and wonders by the power of the Spirit of God. When people see the sick healed, they begin to recognize that if Jesus can do that, He can also save them eternally.
Jesus Healed Every Kind of Person
Matthew 8 and 9 move from the healing of multitudes to seven individual cases. These cases cover nearly every kind of person and every circumstance someone might face. The first was a leper. Leprosy was considered incurable, but the stripes of Jesus are greater than any sickness or disease, no matter how incurable man says it is. The leper asked whether Jesus was willing to heal him. Jesus immediately answered, “I will.” This man was Jewish, poor, separated from society, and suffering from an incurable disease, yet Jesus healed him.
The second case was the centurion’s servant. He was a young Gentile who was paralyzed and came from a wealthy household. He represented the opposite end of the spectrum from the leper. The family could afford doctors, but the doctors could not cure him. Wealth made no difference, poverty made no difference, and being a Jew or Gentile made no difference. Jesus healed both.
The third person was Peter’s mother in law, an older Jewish woman suffering from a fever. Jesus did not dismiss the sickness because it seemed temporary. He healed her, and she arose and ministered to them. Her response shows what we should do with our healing. It becomes a testimony that can be used to minister to others and help preach the gospel.
The fourth case was the woman with the issue of blood. She had suffered for twelve years, had visited doctors, and continued to grow worse. Jesus did not lay hands on her, she touched the hem of His garment, and power flowed out of Him. The fifth case was Jairus’ daughter, a little girl who had died. Jesus took her by the hand and raised her from the dead. He did not have to touch the place where the problem was. His power was sufficient whether the person had been sick for years or had already died.
The sixth case involved blind men, which shows Jesus healing more than one person at a time. The seventh was a man who could not speak because a demon had hold of him. Jesus cast out the demon, and the man’s speech was restored. Whether the problem came from natural sickness or demonic oppression, both were covered by the work of Jesus.
Together, these seven cases show that Jesus healed men and women, Jews and Gentiles, old and young, rich and poor. He healed those recently sick and one who had been sick for twelve years. He healed those who had visited doctors and those who had not, those with fevers and incurable diseases, the living and the dead, one person at a time and more than one at a time. Jesus was not discriminating. The opening case, the leper, settled the question of God’s will when Jesus said, “I will.”
Healing Can Be a Process
If healing is not immediate, it does not mean you were not healed. An instant healing is often more of a miracle, while the word healing itself indicates a process. Sickness is usually progressive. It may begin small and grow over time. Healing is the undoing of sickness, a progressive reversal of what sickness has done.
The Bible says the ten lepers were healed as they went. They did not necessarily see an instant change when Jesus spoke to them. Mark 16 says believers will lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Recovery describes a process. When Jesus cursed the fig tree, His words went immediately to the roots, but the disciples did not see a visible change until the next day. The tree died from the roots, even though the leaves did not show it at once.
In the same way, God’s Word goes to the root of a problem even when the result is not immediately visible. When hands are laid on you and prayer is offered, believe that you receive God’s healing power. Do not abandon your faith simply because you do not see an instant manifestation. Go on your way rejoicing and hold fast to what God has said. It may be a day later or longer before you see the result, but the promise remains, believers will lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
The ministry of Jesus makes God’s will clear. He healed everybody who came to Him, every kind of person, and every kind of sickness and disease. The cross has not failed, the Word has not failed, and Jesus has not changed. Grace is still God’s full hand reaching toward us, and faith is still our empty hand reaching out to receive. Believe that healing belongs to you, receive what Jesus provided, and continue to stand on His Word.
