The Baptism of Fire

The baptism of fire is a misunderstood subject, even among Christians and ministers. Many believers have taken the words of John the Baptist and combined the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the baptism of fire, saying, “I have been baptized with the Holy Spirit and fire.” However, John was not describing two experiences intended for the believer. He was speaking to two different groups of people, believers and unbelievers, and he was describing two very different destinations.
In Matthew 3:11 and 12, John the Baptist said, “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” John then explained that His winnowing fork was in His hand, that He would thoroughly clean His threshing floor, gather the wheat into the barn, and burn the chaff with unquenchable fire. The wheat represents believers, and the chaff represents unbelievers. Jesus baptizes believers with the Holy Spirit, but unbelievers face the baptism of fire.
The Holy Spirit and Fire
When a believer is filled with the Holy Spirit, power comes upon him. The new birth is internal, but being filled with the Holy Spirit is external. The believer can expect supernatural operations through his life, including the gifts of the Spirit, laying hands on the sick, and seeing them recover. This experience is accompanied by the evidence of speaking in other tongues. It is a wonderful experience, but it is not the baptism of fire described by John.
The fire in this passage is judgment. An unbeliever who dies without receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior first goes to hell. Later, after the Great White Throne Judgment, the unbeliever is cast into the lake of fire forever. Hell is terrible, but the lake of fire is far worse. The baptism of fire has nothing to do with a believer receiving a deeper cleansing or another spiritual experience. It is the destiny of those who reject Jesus Christ.
John’s illustration of the winnowing fork makes the meaning clear. In those days, the men harvested the wheat and brought the wheat and chaff together to the women. The women stood where the wind came through and threw the entire mixture into the air with a winnowing fork. The lighter chaff blew away, while the heavier wheat fell back to the ground. They repeated this until only the wheat remained.
In the same way, believers and unbelievers will be gathered before Jesus Christ. Many will claim to be believers, but He will know who has genuinely received Him and who has not. He will separate the wheat from the chaff. The believers will remain on the earth and enter the millennial reign of Jesus Christ, while the unbelievers will be removed from the earth and cast into hell.
Real and Ritual Baptisms
The baptism of fire is one of the baptisms found in the Word of God. There are real baptisms and ritual baptisms. A real baptism does not necessarily involve water. It is a picture of identification with an actual relationship or spiritual event.
The children of Israel were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, yet no one got wet. They walked through the Red Sea on dry ground with water on both sides and the cloud above them. They were identified with Moses, and Moses was identified with the cloud, which represented Jesus Christ. Our sins were also identified with Jesus on the cross. This is called the baptism of the cup, and again, no one got wet.
At the new birth, the Holy Spirit places the believer into union with Jesus Christ, the church, and the body of Christ. First Corinthians 12:13 says, “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.” This is another real baptism, and it occurs when a person receives Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Water baptism is a ritual baptism, a training aid and a picture of what happened at salvation. When a believer goes down into the water, it represents being identified with Jesus in His death and burial. Coming out of the water represents being quickened with Him, raised with Him, and walking in newness of life. Water baptism openly declares, “My old life is behind me, my new life is ahead of me, and I am following Jesus Christ.” The water does not produce salvation, it portrays what has already happened.
Jesus was not baptized because He needed to be saved. He had never sinned. His baptism was an open declaration that He was entering the ministry and accepting the plan of God for His first coming. Before the people, John, and God, Jesus declared His willingness to follow the Father’s will all the way to the cross.
The Rapture and the Second Coming
The baptism of fire occurs in connection with the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, not the rapture of the church. The rapture is an appearing of Jesus Christ. Believers rise to meet Him, receive resurrection bodies, and are removed from the earth during the seven years of tribulation. The church is the family of God, but part of the family is now in heaven and part is on the earth. The rapture brings the whole family together so believers can stand before the judgment seat of Christ and receive rewards.
After the tribulation, the church returns to the earth with Jesus Christ as the Bride of Christ. Jesus then separates the believers from the unbelievers who are alive on the earth. The believers are those who received Jesus during the tribulation. They remain on the earth and enter His thousand year reign. The unbelievers are removed.
Jesus compared this time to the days of Noah. People were so occupied with the normal pleasures of life that they had no time for God or His Word. Noah preached, but they would not listen or enter the ark. When the flood came, the unbelievers were taken away and Noah and his family were left. In the same way, when Jesus spoke of one being taken and another left, the one taken is the sinner and the one left is the believer. This is not a picture of the rapture, it is a picture of the separation at the end of the tribulation.
The same truth appears throughout the parables. In the parable of the wheat and tares, the wheat is kept and the tares are removed. In the parable of the good fish and bad fish, the good fish are kept and the bad fish are thrown away. In Matthew 25, Jesus separates the sheep from the goats. The sheep represent believers who enter the millennial reign, and the goats represent unbelievers who are removed and cast into hell.
Man Needs Regeneration
Those who enter the millennium as natural human beings will have children, and those children will still have to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The millennium will have perfect government, perfect weather, a perfect leader in Jesus Christ, and the curse removed. Yet even in a perfect environment, many will reject Jesus and join the rebellion at the end of the thousand years.
Governments often believe that if they can create a perfect environment, everything will be fine. The millennium proves that perfect environment is not what man needs, man needs regeneration. A person can live in a good nation or in a place filled with oppression, but his surroundings do not determine his salvation. He must receive Jesus Christ. That is why believers have been left here, to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Morality cannot provide salvation. A person may be honest, faithful to his wife, and careful to play by the rules, but being a moral sinner will not get him into heaven. Christian living will be rewarded in heaven, but heaven itself comes through accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Salvation is not based on how good we have been, it is based on how good Jesus was and how He gave His life so that we could receive eternal life.
Salvation is totally by God’s grace and our faith. God initiated it, and we simply receive it. God holds out the gift of eternal life, and faith takes what He is offering. No one can brag about receiving a gift. We cannot brag about the hand that reached out and took it, we can only brag about the One who gave it.
God has handed us the results of the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross, eternal life, blessings in this life, heaven, the millennial reign, the eternity of eternities, and a resurrection body. All these things come because of one simple decision, saying yes to Jesus Christ. There is no diamond on earth and no amount of money that can compare with this gift. It cost God the life and blood of His Son, yet He offers it freely.
Our Responsibility to Share the Gospel
Understanding the baptism of fire should motivate believers to witness for the Lord. We must not become so occupied with the pleasures of normal life that we forget why we are here. Our responsibility is to give people the message. Their responsibility is to listen and respond. If they truly listen, the Holy Spirit will begin to convict them.
We do not have to memorize complicated methods of evangelism. We can pray in the Spirit, expect the Holy Spirit to arrange opportunities, lean on Him, and tell people about accepting Jesus Christ. We should also invite new believers to follow us to church. When Peter and John ministered to the crippled man at the gate called Beautiful, strength came into his ankle bones, and he walked, leaped, and praised God. Yet the important statement that followed was that he went with them into the temple. A new believer needs Scripture upon Scripture and the fellowship of the church.
The person who rejects Jesus Christ has until the time of death to receive Him as Lord and Savior. Adam’s decision brought mankind into slavery, but each person can make the decision to receive Jesus and come out of it. God offers grace, and faith receives the gift. For the believer, there is no reason to fear the baptism of fire. Our hearts can be at peace because we know Jesus Christ, and even death only brings us into the presence of our Savior.
The baptism of fire reveals the seriousness of rejecting God’s grace, but it also reminds us of the greatness of salvation. Eternal life is not something we earn through morality, good works, or human effort. It is the gift of God, purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ and received by faith. Because we have received that gift, we should spend our lives telling others about the goodness of God and pointing them to Jesus Christ.
